Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has backed calls from the Transport Workers Union to introduce mandated sentences for people who assault bus and taxi drivers, breaking with the stance adopted by the LNP state government.
Cr Quirk committed his support at Tuesday's meeting of the council which took place hours after 50 union members marched on Queensland Parliament to present a petition calling for the change.
