I recently read this SMH article about the tragic death of 22 year old Luke Murrie back in 2007, and how the fines for the company and the directors were massively reduced on appeal.

Without knowing more about the case, it's hard to know whether the fines were appropriate, but they seem to be very low, considering a young man lost his life in this accident.

Does anyone else have any views on this?
Are fines effective as an incentive for companies to take WHS more seriously?

As for the WA government's reluctance to release occupational health and safety data to the WA Commission for OHS, what have they got to hide?
